Vera Bickle, Gerry Doyle, Mark Sanders, and Dan Hughes were interviewed on October 16th about a weekly event that they organized called Start Dancing. This was a unique all ages punk event that had DJs and bands playing. They took place in halls, curling clubs, church basements and other unlikely community spaces that they could find around the city. Four years of these events entrenched the spirit of an all ages scene in the early hardcore era. These events allowed for various levels of alternative scenes that include mods, skins, punks, new romantics and others. It was one of my first exposures to the local scene and in hindsight it had a big impact on my life.

Bunchofuckingoofs studio 3 session

This was a long night, but a satisfying night. The TTC made me late. The Lansdowne bus has got to be the worst I have ever rode in my life. The Goofs had taken shelter under an overhang and were good sports about me being late. There was a lot of equipment to load upstairs. It tooks us quite a few loads in the elavator. The set up was unusual with two bass players but we were able to mic everything and get recording. We didn`t get to record everything but we did get these twelve songs with one minor interruption from a security guard. It was pretty late buy the time we finished and the building was locked up so we had to lug everything down three flights of stairs. The amps are the most brutal. Regardless of all that I was riding a high of hanging out with the Goofs all night. They are awesome folks. Here is what we recorded:

1. Business Scum
2. Crack
3. Have you ever seen?
4. Thanks
5. Hogs / Dogs
6. Total Breakdown
7. Alcoholiday turned Alcoholocaust
8. Bike
9. Go Get Screwed
10. Coke
11. Destroy
12. Profit

The Class Assassins "Treason" ep

Side A, “Treason” has this underlying reggae beat to the song that reminds me of VERBAL ASSAULT’s “Tiny Giants” partially for the same reggae back beat, but partially because the sound is beefy. Beefy rock reggae from punks. Makes sense coming from punks who are anti-racists. Reaches back to the roots rebel army origins of the band’s appreciation for bands like the RUTS and SLF. The B Side, “Start Again” is more like what I am used to hearing from the CLASS ASSASSINS. Having just recorded a version of this song for our radio show I appreciate the heavy vocal interplay that comes together as gang chants in this song that live somewhere between SHAM 69 and RANCID. The music is more along the lines of the SKIDS with the not so subtle celtic riffing that made BIG COUNTRY a phenomenon. “Start Again” is my favourite of the two numbers and should have been the A-Side, but both songs are great. And it kind of baffles me how this band doesn’t have more people talking about them especially given that the singer was in an early rendition of CHRONIC SUBMISSION and the bassist was in DIRECT ACTION. Thos are two heavyweights as far as Toronto hardcore is concerned and should take nothing away from the others who played in PROBLEM CHILDREN, HOCKEY TEETH, and BOMB SHELTER. All of these bands were great in their own right. And although bringing together that much talent can be risky as is the case with Brazil’s football team, the egos are in check with the CLASS ASSASSINS. In fact I would say that the egos are no existent. These guys just play stripped down back to basics punk with loads of melody and is an example where bringing together this much talent can blow you away. There are a few examples of this like LIMP WRIST and the SWARM and now streetpunk has a role model. Ilegal “Error de Orden” ep

This is a band from Montreal released at least a year ago. It sounds unlike anything I have heard come from this scene in recent times. It is raw, fuzzed out and playing as fast as they can. There are bands like INEPSY drawing in some traditional influences like DISCHARGE and MOTORHEAD. But ILEGAL go for more obscure sounds that tap into the essence of hardcore sound that I first heard from regions in South America through the “Welcome to 1984” comp. It doesn’t hurt that the band is singing in Spanish. (Lengua Armada – 1355 Grove Street, Apt. B / San Francisco, CA / 94117 / USA)

Zine - EXD, Volume 11, Issue 5

Zero and Dave appeared on the show back in 2008. Zro4 were a great punk band that formed in 1978 and brtoke up in 1986. ZRO4 was comprised of members from many early wave punk bands in the Toronto scene which included the UGLY, the VILETONES, TYRANNA, and BLUE PETER. Zero and Tony Brighton of the UGLY started up the band and they recruited Dave Joudrey on guitar and Mike Bambrick who would go on to play in the SHARKS and BLUE PETER on drums. Chris Hate of the VILETONES, Marc Gamage of the WADS / ARSON, Chick Parker and countless others would fill the ranks throughout the years. In an interview we did in 2008 with Zero and Dave we found out that ZRO4 had played almost every dive in Toronto that would give punk a chance. These places included the Turning “Learning” Point, the Pylon Theatre, The Rock (Oriental) Palace, the Horseshoe, Larry’s (a.k.a. the Head Space), the Issy, the Bev, the Cameron, the Masonic Temple, the El Mo, the Cabana Room, the DMZ and a bunch lesser known places like Scruffers, and pubs in Mattawa and Tottenham. In 1980, Chameleon Records released the song “Blood” on the “No Pedestrians” comp, but it wasn’t until the Punk History Canada comp where “Gimmie Attention” saw the light of day. This came from a number of unreleased recordings with so many great songs that Zero told us about. Photos by Anita Alksnis, Tony Brighton, Gail Bryck, Mark Leach, Wayne Maguire, Ted Russell, and Garry Vortex. Click the photo to download a copy of the zine.
